More than 20 years ago, RLK Solicitors began as a two‑person start‑up operating from a single room, with both founders sharing just one computer to run the entire firm. As the business slowly expanded, the limitations of their early setup became obvious. There was no network, no server, no resilience, and no ability to support more staff without operational friction.


As more people joined, ad‑hoc technology decisions began to pile up, a standalone PC here, a shared drive there, but nothing was truly integrated. Growth was impossible without building IT foundations from the ground up. Without support, they risked the common pitfalls of growing law firms: data sprawl, slow systems, weak security, and inefficiencies that quietly eat into billable hours.

Over the past two decades, Initial IT has supported RLK Solicitors through every stage of their evolution, from a two‑person start‑up to a 40‑staff, multi‑million‑pound firm operating across three offices between Birmingham and London.


Every chapter of their growth included a major technology milestone that we delivered:
 

1. The first small network
We moved the firm from a single shared computer to a properly structured small office network, giving them their first shared storage, user accounts, and reliable workflows.


2. Multi‑server infrastructure
As their caseload grew and staffing expanded, we designed and deployed a full-server environment to handle email, storage, authentication, backups, and workload separation. This gave RLK the reliability and professional‑grade performance required for a modern legal environment.

5. Fully cloud‑managed, secure, and scalable IT
RLK now operates on a fully managed platform with central identity, security, compliance, endpoint management, backups, and threat protection, all designed for the demands of high‑stakes litigation and professional services work.


What started as a single shared PC is now a high‑performance, secure, enterprise‑grade digital environment powering one of the region’s fastest‑growing litigation firms.

Case Study: The Carat Shop

From compromised systems to secure, controlled, and protected IT

Before working with Initial IT

A compromised environment putting revenue and reputation at risk

Before engaging Initial IT, The Carat Shop’s IT environment was not just inefficient — it was actively compromised.

​

Email was using old-fashioned POP and IMAP services with no multi‑factor authentication, no central security monitoring, and no consistent policies in place. The business had already suffered email account hijacks and website compromise, creating a very real risk of impersonation, invoice interception, lost revenue, and fraud. There was no reliable way to tell who had accessed systems, what had been changed, or whether further compromise was still ongoing.

​

Business data was spread across personal OneDrive accounts, Dropbox, and Google Drive, often shared informally and without clear ownership. In some cases, former employees still retained access to company information. There was no dependable audit trail, no consistent backup strategy, and limited ability to prove what data had been accessed or altered if something went wrong.

​

Devices were unmanaged and inconsistently protected. Some had antivirus installed, others did not. Patching was ad‑hoc, disks were not encrypted, and at least one member of staff confirmed their laptop had previously been compromised. From a leadership perspective, there was no clear visibility of risk, only the knowledge that the business was exposed.

​

As the company continued to grow, this created a dangerous situation in which cyber risk, financial exposure, and operational uncertainty were increasing simultaneously.

Outcome:

The business was operating in a compromised state, with revenue, customer trust, and reputation exposed to ongoing cyber risk and little visibility or control.

After working with Initial IT

Control restored, revenue protected, and confidence rebuilt

After Initial IT stepped in, The Carat Shop moved from a compromised and uncertain position to one that is secure, monitored, and under control.

Email was migrated into Microsoft 365 and secured with enforced multi‑factor authentication, modern security policies, and continuous monitoring. Insecure legacy access methods were removed, closing off the attack paths that had previously been exploited. Since these controls were put in place, email compromise has stopped, and spam and malicious email levels dropped significantly, restoring confidence in everyday communication.

All devices are now centrally managed with consistent antivirus, patching, and security baselines. This removed blind spots, reduced the risk of malware and ransomware, and ensured every computer accessing company systems meets a defined security standard.

​

Business data is being brought under proper control using Microsoft 365, replacing personal cloud storage with structured, auditable access. Leadership now has clear visibility of where data lives, who can access it, and how it is protected, supporting both commercial operations and data protection responsibilities.

​

Most importantly, IT is no longer a constant concern. Instead of reacting to incidents and unknown risks, The Carat Shop now operates with a clear security baseline, a live risk register, and a planned roadmap for continuous improvement.

Outcome:
The Carat Shop now operates on a secure, monitored, and well‑controlled IT platform that protects revenue, restores confidence, and supports the business as it grows.

Risk Removed

Email account takeover, impersonation, invoice interception, unmanaged devices, uncontrolled data access, and the hidden threats that previously put revenue and reputation at risk.
